Why Choose This Standard Hackle and Comb Set?

Whether you're a seasoned spinner or just beginning your fiber journey, this standard wool comb and hackle set is engineered to enhance your skills and help you create beautifully prepared fibers with ease. With .25" tine spacing, they're ideal for general fiber prep, coarser fibers, and creating beautiful roving. Whether combing, blending, dizing, or preparing your fiber for spinning, you will experience the precision and high-quality craftsmanship that will take your fiber art to the next level.

About the Hackle

Overall dimensions are between six and twenty-two inches by 1 1/4" by 1". The tines are seated ½" deep following the taper — strictly an aesthetic choice, except on the 3.5" hackle which is designed to be used as a fixed comb attached to a table. Each tine drops down an amount equal to the taper on each side, finished with a 45° chamfer on all edges. These provide a full 3.5", 6", 12", or 18" of working space from end to end. A total of between 12 and 213 tines.

To secure to a table or any other sturdy surface, there's a ½" ear on each side for a clamp. The holes are .25" diameter for an L-style hook.

As a tool for combing, de-vegging, straightening, aligning, and the overall general prepping of your fiber for spinning or carding. Creating roving is super easy with a diz — load on your mix of fibers and gently pull your roving through the hole as you glide along the width of the hackle.

About the Comb

Hand crafted from premium Maple with ergonomic handles turned from Maple or Hickory. Very lightweight at 7–10 ounces per comb — built tough with precision and durability in mind. The tines are tempered stainless steel and will not rust or deteriorate over time. The wood is hand rubbed with eco-friendly Danish oil, sanded, and reapplied until smooth. Heads are linearly matched or book matched depending on availability. Every detail gets my attention because attention to detail is my default 🤭.

Combing fiber can be relaxing and is a great hands-on experience. As you watch your progress pile up, you are ridding your fleece of vegetable matter and getting your fiber ready for carding or spinning.

Standard Tine Density

Spaced 1/4 inch apart between the rows and each other. There are between 12 and 46 tines in all.

The overall size of the head for a single row is 3 1/2" wide by 1" deep by 1" tall. The overall size of the head for a double, triple or quadruple row is 3 1/2" wide by 1 1/4" deep by 1" tall.

Tines per Comb — Standard Configuration

  • Single Row: 12 tines
  • Double Row: 23 tines
  • Triple Row: 33 tines
  • Quadruple Row: 46 tines

Main Purposes of Combing Fiber

  • Straightening and aligning fibers
  • Ridding fleece of vegetable and other loose matter and debris
  • Separating and opening up fiber for carding
  • Loosening up the fiber for carding and eventually spinning

The wood is hand rubbed with an eco-friendly Danish oil, sanded and then repeated until smooth. These would not be suitable to comb a living sheep 🐑. Baaa!

Frequently Asked Questions — Standard Tooth Wool Comb Set

Standard tooth wool combs are ideal for longwool and medium-grade fibers like Romney, Corriedale, BFL, and raw fleece with a staple length of 3 inches or more. They excel at opening, aligning, and preparing coarser fibers for worsted-style spinning.

One of the best techniques with this set is combing directly from the hackle — load your fiber onto the hackle, then use a single comb to draw and align the fiber straight off the tines. This gives you a beautifully combed preparation with just one comb, making the hackle act as a fiber-holding station while you work.

The set includes a matched pair of standard tooth wool combs handcrafted from premium hardwoods, ready to use straight out of the box for worsted-style fiber preparation.

Each comb is handcrafted in Spokane, WA from premium hardwoods with tines set by hand for consistent spacing. Built for serious fiber prep, they are designed to last a lifetime of heavy use.
