Frequently Asked Questions — Fine Tooth Wool Combs
What fibers are fine tooth wool combs designed for?
Fine tooth wool combs are optimized for fibers under 25 microns — merino, cashmere, qiviut, fine BFL, and silk blends. The closer tine spacing fully aligns delicate fibers without breakage, producing a smooth, lustrous preparation.
How do wool combs differ from a hackle?
Wool combs are hand-held and worked in pairs — fiber is loaded onto one comb and transferred to the other to align and remove short fibers. Hackles are stationary tools better suited for drawing a continuous top from larger quantities of fiber.
Can I use fine tooth combs to blend luxury fibers?
Absolutely — fine tooth combs are ideal for blending precious fibers like merino and silk, cashmere and qiviut, or fine wool and alpaca. Work the fibers through together for a smooth, evenly blended preparation.
How do I care for my fine tooth wool combs?
Keep tines clean and free of fiber buildup after each use. A light application of camellia or mineral oil on the wood base periodically will protect the finish. Always store with tine covers to protect both the tips and your hands.
