General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) Information
- Intended Use: Designed as bobbins for boat shuttles in weaving applications. Holds weft yarn for smooth shuttle operation on table looms, floor looms, and folding looms. Suitable for weavers of all skill levels.
- Product Composition: Made from cardboard/paper materials. No coatings, adhesives, or synthetic materials.
- Age Restrictions: Suitable for all ages. Supervise young children during use to prevent ingestion of small cardboard pieces.
- Potential Hazards: Cardboard edges may cause minor paper cuts if handled roughly. Keep away from open flame or heat sources — cardboard is flammable. Do not use if quill is wet, crushed, or structurally compromised.
- Usage Instructions: Wind weft yarn evenly onto quill before inserting into shuttle. Insert quill into shuttle body with a washer on each end for smooth rotation. Replace quill when worn, crushed, or no longer holds its shape.
- Care and Maintenance: Store in a dry environment away from moisture. Do not expose to water or high humidity, which may cause warping or softening. Replace as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions — Cardboard Weaving Quills
What are cardboard weaving quills used for?
Cardboard weaving quills are bobbins designed to hold weft yarn inside a boat shuttle. They sit inside the shuttle cavity and rotate freely as yarn unwinds during weaving, allowing smooth, consistent weft delivery across the loom.
What size boat shuttles do these quills fit?
The 3.5 inch quill fits my 8 inch slim boat shuttle and slim double bobbin boat shuttle. The 5 inch quill fits the 10 inch slim boat shuttle. The 6 inch quill fits the 12 inch slim boat shuttle.
Do I need a bobbin winder to use these quills?
A bobbin winder makes winding faster and more even, but it's not required. You can wind by hand — hold the quill between your fingers and wrap yarn evenly from end to end. A winder is worth it if you weave regularly or go through quills quickly.
How do I get smooth, even yarn delivery from a quill?
Wind yarn evenly across the quill from end to end rather than building it up in one spot. An even yarn package unwinds with consistent tension and prevents the shuttle from jerking or catching mid-throw.
How full should I wind a quill?
Wind the quill until the yarn is about 1/8 inch from the ends — leaving a small gap prevents the yarn from slipping off the edges during weaving. Overfilling can cause the quill to bind inside the shuttle cavity.
Can I reuse cardboard quills?
Cardboard quills are designed for repeated use. Once the yarn is used up, simply wind a new supply onto the quill and it's ready to go again.
