Which Hackle?

Handmade Fine Tooth Hackle by Riley Wood and Fiber Art

Hackle Widths Available: 3.5", 6", 12", or 18"

These fine tooth hackles are precision tools for detailed fiber prep work. Perfect for fine fibers, creating smooth roving, and achieving professional-quality results.

Key Features:

  • ✓ Sharp, sturdy tines with 3-3.75" exposed length
  • ✓ Available in 1, 2, or 3 rows
  • ✓ Handles all fiber types and lengths
  • ✓ Works perfectly with a diz to make your own roving
  • ✓ Unique tapered design with 45° chamfered edges

Overall dimensions are between six and twenty-two inches by 1 1/4" by 1". The tines are seated ½" deep and following the taper, which is strictly an aesthetic choice. Except on the 3.5" hackle which is more or less meant to be a comb attached to a table without the combing pad. If you plan to always comb from a fixed comb, this option is great! I love the way these turned out and nobody's making their hackles like this. Making them more unique without losing functionality and capabilities. Each tine drops down an amount equal to the amount of taper on each side. Finished off with a beautiful 45° Chamfer on all edges. These provide a full 3.5", 6", 12", or 18" of space from one end to the other. A total of between 15 and 285 tines.

As a tool for combing, de-vegging, straightening, aligning, and the overall general prepping of your fiber for spinning, or in preparation for carding. Creating roving is super easy with a diz (anything semi rigid with a small hole in it). Load on your mix of fibers and gently pull your roving through the hole as you glide along the width of the hackle.

Frequently Asked Questions — Fine Tooth Hackle

Fine tooth hackles are optimized for fibers under 25 microns — merino, cashmere, qiviut, fine BFL, and silk blends. The closer tine spacing fully aligns delicate fibers without breakage, producing a smooth, lustrous top.

Hackles are stationary tools — fiber is lashed onto the tines and drawn off in a continuous top, ideal for processing larger quantities efficiently. Wool combs are hand-held and worked in pairs, better for smaller batches and more controlled prep.

Absolutely — fine tooth hackles are ideal for blending precious fibers like merino/silk, cashmere/qiviut, or fine wool/alpaca. Lash the fibers together onto the tines and draw off a smooth, evenly blended top.

Keep tines clean and free of fiber buildup after each use. A light application of camellia or mineral oil on the wood base periodically will protect the finish. Always store with a tine guard to protect both the tips and your hands.
