What Configuration?

A lightweight, powerful pair of tools for preparing beautiful fiber — crafted from stunning Curly Maple. Hand crafted from premium highly figured Curly Maple heads with Maple handles, this limited edition matched pair is perfect for straightening fibers, removing debris, and creating smooth, aligned top ready for spinning. At just 6–7 ounces per comb, they're comfortable for extended combing sessions while being built tough enough to handle any fiber type. Every detail gets my attention because attention to detail is my default 🤭.

If you want a truly artistically inspired and completely beautiful fiber tool, these should be in your toolbox. Each pair features highly figured, eye-catching Curly Maple that makes every set unique. The degree of “curly” figure varies between pieces, making each pair one-of-a-kind.

Why Choose Curly Maple Combs?

These are the same high-quality combs I make from Maple, only crafted from highly figured and very eye-catching Curly Maple. The premium wood costs $125 per board foot, which is why each pair is $25 more than standard combs — but the stunning beauty and uniqueness make them worth every penny. Combing fiber can be relaxing and is a great hands-on experience, and doing it with these beautiful tools makes it even more special.

The wood is hand rubbed with an eco-friendly Danish oil using a dip and drip technique that allows the oil to penetrate deeper than standard application, sanded and then repeated until smooth. The heads of the combs are linearly matched for consistent performance. These would not be suitable to comb a living sheep 🐑. Baaa!

Frequently Asked Questions — Wool Combs

Standard tooth combs are designed for longwool and medium-grade fibers like Romney, Corriedale, and BFL with a staple length of 3 inches or more. Fine tooth combs are optimized for fibers under 25 microns — merino, cashmere, qiviut, and silk blends. This set gives you both for a complete fiber prep toolkit.

Wool combs are hand-held and worked in pairs — fiber is loaded onto one comb and transferred to the other to align and remove short fibers. Hackles are stationary tools better suited for drawing a continuous top from larger quantities of fiber.

Yes — load multiple fiber types onto the comb together and work them through to create a blended preparation. Use the standard tooth combs for bulkier natural fibers and the fine tooth combs for luxury blends like merino and silk.

Each comb is handcrafted in Spokane, WA from premium hardwoods with tines set by hand for consistent spacing. Built for serious fiber prep, they are designed to last a lifetime of heavy use.
