Why Choose a Medium Turkish Drop Spindle?

The Medium size is the most versatile Turkish drop spindle—perfect for spinning a wide range of yarn weights from fine to medium. It's light enough for delicate fibers but substantial enough for consistent control. Turkish drop spindles are ideal for learning because you can "park" the spindle (stop it without losing your twist) to control tension and draft more fiber. As you spin, the yarn winds around the interlocking arms in a crisscross pattern, creating a center-pull ball that slides right off when you're finished—no need to wind onto a separate ball!

Specifications:

  • Whorl: Cherry at Demarcation, 4" (10cm) wide
  • Shaft: White Oak, 5.25" (13cm) long
  • Weight: Approximately 13.67 grams
  • Finish: Hand-rubbed Danish oil

How to Use Your Turkish Drop Spindle:

Attach a leader yarn to the shaft and wind it around the arms in a crisscross pattern (typically under one arm, over two). Draft fiber from your roving, rolag, or batt and join it to the leader. Spin clockwise or counterclockwise depending on your desired twist direction. You can park the spindle between your knees, under your arm, or on a table to control tension while drafting. Wind your spun yarn around the arms following the same crisscross pattern to build up your center-pull ball.

Craftsmanship & Materials:

Each spindle is individually handcrafted from ethically sourced domestic hardwoods. I spend over 2 hours with each spindle ensuring perfect balance and heirloom quality. The wood is fine-sanded, treated with eco-friendly Danish oil, sanded again, and reapplied as needed for a smooth, almost silk-like finish. The whorl arms are carefully matched for consistent performance.

Important Notes:

Wood grain and color may vary slightly from photos, as each spindle is individually handcrafted. Your spindle will match the wood species listed in the title. I reuse packaging materials when possible to reduce costs and environmental impact.

Frequently Asked Questions — Medium Turkish Drop Spindle

What fibers work best with a Medium Turkish Drop Spindle?

Medium spindles are versatile — ideal for fingering to DK weight yarns using fibers like merino, Corriedale, alpaca, and wool blends.

Is a Medium Turkish Drop Spindle good for beginners?

Yes — medium weight spindles are a great starting point. They provide enough momentum to maintain spin while still being responsive and easy to control.

How do I get the most spin time out of my spindle?

Well-prepared fiber makes the biggest difference — smooth, evenly drafted fiber reduces drag and extends spin time. Riley Wood and Fiber Art spindles are precision-balanced by hand, which maximizes spin efficiency and keeps the spindle true throughout the entire spin.

Can I use a Medium Turkish Drop Spindle for plying?

Yes — Turkish drop spindles are excellent for plying. Wind your singles onto the spindle and ply directly from the cop, which unwinds smoothly as a center-pull ball.
