Why Choose Hemp Drive Bands?

Hemp is a naturally strong, flexible fiber that has been used for centuries in rope and cordage. Unlike synthetic materials, hemp is biodegradable, renewable, and provides a traditional feel that many spinners prefer. The natural texture of hemp creates excellent grip on both the flyer and drive wheel, ensuring smooth, consistent rotation without slipping. Hemp drive bands also resist stretching over time, maintaining proper tension longer than many synthetic alternatives.

Available Lengths:

  • Brake Band (3 feet): For brake systems on Scotch tension wheels — $2.00
  • Single Drive (7 feet): For single drive spinning wheels — $4.00
  • Double Drive (15 feet): For double drive spinning wheels — $6.00
  • All Three Sizes (3' + 7' + 15'): Get all three for $10.00 — Save $2 vs buying individually

Specifications:

  • Material: 100% natural hemp
  • Strength: 48lb test
  • Diameter: Approximately 2mm
  • Color: Natural tan/beige
  • Lengths: 3', 7', or 15' (select variant)

How to Install Your Hemp Drive Band:

Measure your existing drive band or consult your spinning wheel manual to determine the correct length. Remove the old drive band and thread the new hemp cord around your flyer and drive wheel according to your wheel's drive system (single drive, double drive, or Scotch tension). Tie the ends securely with a square knot or reef knot, leaving a small tail. Trim excess cord if needed. The natural hemp will soften and conform to your wheel with use.

Care & Maintenance:

Hemp drive bands require minimal maintenance. If the band becomes dry or stiff, you can lightly dampen it with water to restore flexibility. Avoid over-oiling, as hemp naturally grips well without lubrication. Replace the drive band when you notice excessive wear, fraying, or loss of tension.

Eco-Friendly & Sustainable:

Hemp is one of the most sustainable fibers available. It grows quickly without pesticides, requires minimal water, and enriches the soil. By choosing a hemp drive band, you're supporting traditional fiber arts while making an environmentally responsible choice.

Important Notes: Natural hemp color may vary slightly from batch to batch due to the organic nature of the material. This is normal and does not affect performance. Hemp may have a natural earthy scent when new, which will dissipate with use.

GENERAL PRODUCT SAFETY REGULATION (GPSR) INFORMATION

Intended Use:
Natural hemp cord intended for use as a replacement spinning wheel drive band on compatible spinning wheels.

Material:
• Natural hemp cord
• Approximately 48 lb cord

The hemp drive band is sized and tied to form a continuous drive band loop.

This product is not fused.

Because hemp is a natural fiber material, minor variations in color, texture, diameter, and surface appearance are expected.

COMPATIBILITY

Before installation, confirm that:

• A hemp cord drive band is appropriate for the intended spinning wheel

• The finished drive band length is correct for the wheel

• The cord diameter is suitable for the wheel's drive wheel and pulley system

• The drive band can be routed according to the spinning wheel manufacturer's intended configuration

Do not assume that a hemp drive band is compatible with every spinning wheel.

If the wheel manufacturer specifies a particular drive band type, material, size, routing method, or installation procedure, follow those instructions.

CAUTION — MOVING SPINNING WHEEL COMPONENT

The drive band moves continuously around the drive wheel and pulley system during normal operation.

• Keep fingers and hands away from the drive band while the wheel is moving

• Keep hair, loose clothing, jewelry, yarn, fiber, and other objects clear of the moving drive band and pulleys

• Stop the spinning wheel completely before installing, removing, repositioning, tying, or inspecting the drive band

• Do not attempt to adjust the drive band while the wheel is rotating

• Keep children and pets away from the moving drive system

• This is a spinning wheel component, not a toy

BEFORE INSTALLATION

Inspect the hemp cord before installation.

Do not install or use the drive band if:

• The cord is severely frayed

• Fibers are significantly cut or broken

• The cord has become unusually thin or weak in one area

• The cord is contaminated with a substance that could affect its strength or operation

• The knot is damaged, loose, or improperly formed

• Any condition could cause the drive band to fail unexpectedly

INSTALLATION

Stop the spinning wheel completely before installing the drive band.

Route the hemp drive band according to the normal configuration for the specific spinning wheel.

During installation:

• Confirm the cord follows the correct pulley path

• Make sure the band is not twisted unless the spinning wheel design specifically requires a crossed drive band

• Keep the cord away from sharp edges or damaged pulley surfaces

• Do not apply excessive tension in order to force an incorrectly sized band into position

After installation, rotate the wheel slowly by hand and confirm that the cord travels normally around the intended drive wheel and pulleys.

TYING THE DRIVE BAND

The hemp drive band is joined by tying rather than fusing.

The knot should:

• Hold securely during normal operation

• Be positioned so it can travel through the drive system without catching

• Be trimmed and arranged so excessively long cord ends do not interfere with moving components

• Remain tight enough that the loop cannot unexpectedly separate

Inspect the knot before each use.

If the knot loosens, stop the spinning wheel completely before correcting it.

DRIVE BAND TENSION

Use only enough tension for normal spinning wheel operation.

Excessive tension may:

• Stretch the hemp fibers unnecessarily

• Accelerate drive band wear

• Place unnecessary load on wheel components

• Affect normal spinning wheel operation

• Cause premature cord failure

If the spinning wheel includes a drive band tension adjustment system, follow the wheel manufacturer's instructions.

BEFORE EACH USE

Before operating the spinning wheel:

• Inspect the hemp cord for wear, fraying, or damage

• Inspect the knot

• Confirm the drive band is correctly routed

• Confirm the band remains seated on the intended wheel and pulley surfaces

• Check that the band has appropriate tension

• Rotate the wheel slowly by hand if necessary to verify normal tracking

Do not operate the wheel if the drive band repeatedly leaves the intended pulley path or behaves abnormally.

SAFE USE

During spinning:

• Keep hands away from the moving drive band and pulleys

• Keep loose fiber and yarn from becoming wrapped around the drive band

• Stop the wheel before clearing tangled fiber or yarn

• Stop the wheel before changing drive band routing, tension, or knot position

• Do not intentionally touch or slow the moving drive band by hand

If the drive band comes off during operation, allow the wheel to stop completely before reinstalling it.

NATURAL HEMP FIBER

Hemp is a natural fiber and will wear differently from synthetic drive band materials.

Normal use may gradually result in:

• Surface fuzzing

• Minor fraying

• Polishing of the fibers

• Stretching

• Changes in flexibility

• Wear near the knot

• Wear where the cord contacts the drive wheel or pulleys

Regular inspection is necessary.

Replace the drive band before normal wear develops into significant weakening or structural damage.

MOISTURE

Natural hemp can absorb moisture.

Avoid prolonged exposure to:

• Water

• High humidity

• Oils

• Chemicals

• Other liquids that could affect the cord

If the drive band becomes wet:

• Remove it from service

• Allow it to dry completely before reuse

• Inspect it for changes in strength, shape, or condition

Do not operate the spinning wheel with a saturated or significantly damp hemp drive band.

CARE

• Keep the hemp drive band clean and dry

• Remove loose fiber, yarn, and debris as needed

• Avoid contact with sharp objects

• Avoid unnecessary contact with oils, solvents, cleaners, or chemicals

• Do not intentionally cut or abrade the cord while installed

• Inspect the knot and high-wear areas regularly

Minor surface fuzzing may occur naturally with use, but significant fraying or fiber breakage indicates the drive band should be replaced.

STORAGE

If removed from the spinning wheel, store the hemp drive band:

• In a clean, dry location

• Away from excessive moisture and humidity

• Away from sharp objects

• Away from open flames and excessive heat

• Without unnecessary tension

• Without heavy objects placed on top of it

• Away from children and pets

DISCONTINUE USE

Stop using the hemp drive band if:

• The cord becomes significantly frayed

• Multiple fibers become cut or broken

• The cord develops a substantially weakened or thinned area

• The knot repeatedly loosens during normal operation

• The band can no longer maintain appropriate tension

• The cord becomes permanently stretched beyond useful adjustment

• The band repeatedly leaves the intended pulley path despite correct installation and wheel adjustment

• Any damage develops that could cause unexpected drive band failure

Replace a worn or damaged hemp drive band before continuing to operate the spinning wheel.
