Purchase Option

Many drum carders use two pulleys and route the drive band in a figure-eight pattern between them — so the drums spin in opposite directions. That crossover point is where the band rubs against itself, and where standard clear polyurethane can break down over time. The green material's higher durometer and self-lubricating properties are built exactly for that. If your carder uses a crossed drive band, this is the material you want. Sold by the foot — need 29 inches? Buy 3 feet.

Key Features:

  • ✓ Premium green polyurethane — Higher durometer for extra durability
  • ✓ Self-lubricating material — Can contact itself without degrading
  • ✓ 1/4" diameter — Ideal for drum carders, larger drive systems, and footman connectors
  • ✓ Sold by the foot — Buy only what you need, cut to your exact length
  • ✓ Professional fusing service available — $7 for a joined, ready-to-install band
  • ✓ Excellent grip — Provides consistent tension and smooth operation
  • ✓ Stretch-resistant — Maintains proper tension over time
  • ✓ Universal compatibility — Fits most drum carders and larger drive systems
  • ✓ Easy to fuse at home — Simple candle-fusing technique, no special tools required
  • ✓ Made in America — Quality craftsmanship from Spokane, Washington

Compatible With:

  • Drum carders (Strauch, Louet, Ashford, Pat Green, and more)
  • Footman connector replacement (typically requires 1 foot)
  • Jack drive systems and similar equipment where self-lubricating material is preferred
  • Custom length replacements for specialty or antique equipment

Pricing:

  • Material by the Foot: $4.00/ft
  • Footman Connector (1'): $5.50 — Pre-cut 1-foot length for footman connectors
  • Custom Fused Band (any length): $7.00 — I cut and professionally fuse it to your exact specification

Not Sure Which Size or Color You Need?

Message me before you order — I typically respond within five minutes. Tell me your carder make and model and I'll point you to the right material and length.

Custom Fused Band Option:

Not comfortable fusing the band yourself? Select the Custom Fused Band variant and message me with the exact length you need (in inches). I'll cut and professionally fuse your drive band to your specification, creating a seamless, ready-to-install band. Ships same day (except Sundays). And if you ever have any trouble with a fused band, reach out — I'll make it right.

Why Choose Green Polyurethane?

On many drum carders, the drive band doesn't just loop around the pulleys — it crosses over itself between them in a figure-eight. This is intentional: it makes the two drums spin in opposite directions, which is how the carder works. But that crossover point is where the band rubs against itself with every rotation. Standard clear polyurethane can degrade at that contact point over time. The green material has a higher durometer (hardness) rating and is self-lubricating, meaning it can handle that friction without breaking down. If your carder uses a crossed drive band configuration, green is the right choice.

Specifications:

  • Material: Premium green polyurethane
  • Diameter: 1/4"
  • Durometer: Higher rating for self-lubricating applications
  • Color: Green
  • Sold: By the foot (12 inches per unit)
  • Compatibility: Universal fit for most drum carders and larger drive systems
  • Origin: Made in America

DIY Fusing Instructions:

Cut the drive band material to your exact required length. To join the ends, light a candle and hold each end approximately 1/2"–3/4" from the flame (not touching). When the material begins to shine and soften, quickly but gently press the ends together firmly and hold for 30–60 seconds until cooled. Use flush cutters to trim any excess squeeze-out for a smooth seam. The material heats quickly, so work carefully to avoid melting.

How to Measure Your Drive Band:

Remove your old drive band and measure its total length when laid flat. Alternatively, wrap a string around your drive wheel or carder drums in the same path as the drive band, mark where it meets, and measure the string. Most drum carders require 3–5 feet of material.

Care & Maintenance

Store unused material in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation. Inspect your drive band regularly for signs of wear, stretching, or damage. Replace promptly if you notice excessive wear, cracking, or loss of tension. Clean your drive wheel or carder drums before installing a new drive band to ensure optimal grip and performance.

If you have any questions about selecting the right length, fusing your drive band, or determining if this material is right for your equipment, please don't hesitate to contact me. I'm always here to answer questions and provide guidance on any of my products. I typically respond within five minutes, which I believe is extremely important in building rapport, credibility, and getting to know you as a customer.

General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) Information

  • Intended Use: Replacement drive band material for drum carders, footman connectors, and fiber-related machinery. Designed for adult use in fiber arts and textile crafts.
  • Age Restrictions: Suitable for adult use only. Not recommended for children under 18 due to potential strangulation and choking hazards.
  • Potential Hazards: Polyurethane cord may pose a strangulation risk if improperly handled or worn around the neck. Small cut pieces may present a choking hazard. Keep away from small children and pets. When heat-fusing, use caution with open flame to avoid burns or fire hazard.
  • Usage Instructions: Cut material to exact required length for your equipment. Ensure proper installation and tensioning to avoid excessive wear or breakage. Do not over-tension, as this may cause premature failure. If using DIY fusing method, exercise extreme caution with open flame.
  • Installation Safety: When heat-fusing ends together, work in a well-ventilated area away from flammable materials. Material heats quickly — do not touch melted polyurethane as it can cause burns. Allow fused joint to cool completely before handling or installing.
  • Maintenance: Inspect drive band regularly for signs of wear, cracking, or stretching. Replace promptly if damaged or excessively worn to maintain equipment functionality and safety.
  • Storage Instructions: Store in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture to prevent material degradation. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Disposal Instructions: Dispose of responsibly according to local polyurethane recycling guidelines. Do not discard in regular household waste. Contact local waste management for proper disposal methods.
  • Material Information: Premium green polyurethane with higher durometer rating. Non-toxic when used as intended. Avoid inhalation of fumes if material is burned or overheated.

Frequently Asked Questions — Polyurethane Drive Band By the Foot

Polyurethane drive bands are smooth, durable, and consistent — they grip the whorl cleanly, stretch minimally, and outlast traditional cotton or wool drive bands significantly.

Measure the drive band path on your wheel — from the drive wheel, around the flyer whorl, and back. Add a few extra inches for joining. When in doubt, buy a little more than you think you need.

The ends can be fused together using heat — a lighter or heat tool held briefly near the cut ends will melt and bond them cleanly. No knots needed.

Polyurethane drive band cord works with both spinning wheels and drum carders. The 1/4 inch and 5/16 inch sizes are sized for drum carders, while smaller diameters are suited for spinning wheel whorls. Check your tool's whorl groove to confirm the right diameter for your application.
