Why Choose Black Polyurethane?
Black polyurethane drive bands offer the same superior grip, durability, and stretch resistance as clear polyurethane — with a classic look that complements most spinning wheel finishes and hides dust and wear better over time. The material maintains consistent tension, resists oils, moisture, and temperature changes, and is ideal for long-term use in fiber equipment.
Specifications:
- Material: Premium black polyurethane
- Diameter: 1/8"
- Color: Black
- Sold: By the foot (12 inches per unit)
- Compatibility: Universal fit for most spinning wheels using 1/8" drive bands
- Origin: Made in America
DIY Fusing Instructions:
Cut the drive band material to your exact required length. To join the ends, light a candle and hold each end approximately 1/2"–3/4" from the flame (not touching). When the material begins to shine and soften, quickly but gently press the ends together firmly and hold for 30–60 seconds until cooled. Use flush cutters to trim any excess squeeze-out for a smooth seam. The material heats quickly, so work carefully to avoid melting.
How to Measure Your Drive Band:
Remove your old drive band and measure its total length when laid flat. Alternatively, wrap a string around your drive wheel and flyer in the same path as the drive band, mark where it meets, and measure the string. Most single-drive spinning wheels require 6–8 feet of material.
Care & Maintenance
Store unused material in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation. Inspect your drive band regularly for signs of wear, stretching, or damage. Replace promptly if you notice excessive wear, cracking, or loss of tension. Clean your drive wheel and flyer before installing a new drive band to ensure optimal grip and performance.
If you have any questions about selecting the right length, fusing your drive band, or determining if this material is right for your spinning wheel, please don't hesitate to contact me. I'm always here to answer questions and provide guidance on any of my products. I typically respond within five minutes, which I believe is extremely important in building rapport, credibility, and getting to know you as a customer.

General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) Information
- Intended Use: Replacement drive band material for spinning wheels and fiber-related machinery. Designed for adult use in fiber arts and textile crafts.
- Age Restrictions: Suitable for adult use only. Not recommended for children under 18 due to potential strangulation and choking hazards.
- Potential Hazards: Polyurethane cord may pose a strangulation risk if improperly handled or worn around the neck. Small cut pieces may present a choking hazard. Keep away from small children and pets. When heat-fusing, use caution with open flame to avoid burns or fire hazard.
- Usage Instructions: Cut material to exact required length for your equipment. Ensure proper installation and tensioning to avoid excessive wear or breakage. Do not over-tension, as this may cause premature failure. If using DIY fusing method, exercise extreme caution with open flame.
- Installation Safety: When heat-fusing ends together, work in a well-ventilated area away from flammable materials. Material heats quickly — do not touch melted polyurethane as it can cause burns. Allow fused joint to cool completely before handling or installing.
- Maintenance: Inspect drive band regularly for signs of wear, cracking, or stretching. Replace promptly if damaged or excessively worn to maintain equipment functionality and safety.
- Storage Instructions: Store in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture to prevent material degradation. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Disposal Instructions: Dispose of responsibly according to local polyurethane recycling guidelines. Do not discard in regular household waste. Contact local waste management for proper disposal methods.
- Material Information: Premium black polyurethane. Non-toxic when used as intended. Avoid inhalation of fumes if material is burned or overheated.

Frequently Asked Questions — Polyurethane Drive Band By the Foot
What is a polyurethane drive band?
Polyurethane drive bands are smooth, durable, and consistent — they grip the whorl cleanly, stretch minimally, and outlast traditional cotton or wool drive bands significantly.
How do I know how much to buy?
Measure the drive band path on your wheel — from the drive wheel, around the flyer whorl, and back. Add a few extra inches for joining. When in doubt, buy a little more than you think you need.
How do I join the ends to make a loop?
The ends can be fused together using heat — a lighter or heat tool held briefly near the cut ends will melt and bond them cleanly. No knots needed.
What tools can I use this drive band cord with?
Polyurethane drive band cord works with both spinning wheels and drum carders. The 1/4 inch and 5/16 inch sizes are sized for drum carders, while smaller diameters are suited for spinning wheel whorls. Check your tool's whorl groove to confirm the right diameter for your application.
