Which Boat Shuttle?

Two bobbins. Instant color changes. The Double Bobbin Closed Bottom Boat Shuttle is built for weavers who want to switch colors on the fly without stopping to rewind. Load two 3.5" bobbins with different colors and swap between them effortlessly — or get creative and wind two yarns on each bobbin in opposite directions to weave with up to four colors at once. Each 3.5" bobbin holds approximately 120 feet (40 yards / 36.6 meters) of 5/2 Cotton. Handcrafted in Spokane, WA from premium hardwoods and precision-shaped for smooth, effortless throws across your loom.

Key Features:

  • ✓ Holds two 3.5" boat shuttle bobbins simultaneously — instant color changes
  • ✓ 12" length — same proven dimensions as my standard 12" Slim Boat Shuttle
  • ✓ Six premium hardwoods — Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Purple Heart, Padauk, Quartersawn White Oak
  • ✓ Closed bottom design — Protects yarn and prevents snags
  • ✓ Dual yarn guides — Smooth yarn exit in both directions, no catching
  • ✓ Flat bottom — Glides effortlessly across warp threads
  • ✓ Ergonomic shape — Comfortable grip reduces hand fatigue
  • ✓ Hand-sanded smooth finish — Eco-friendly Danish oil (except Padauk, left natural)
  • ✓ Lightweight hardwood construction — Swift, agile movement for efficient weaving

What's Included:

One Closed Bottom Double Bobbin Boat Shuttle (12"), bobbin axle (1/16" music wire), 4 small washers, and two 3.5" cardboard quills.

Why Choose This Shuttle?

This isn't just a tool — it's an extension of your creative expression. With two bobbins loaded and ready, you can switch colors instantly mid-row, keep a contrast yarn at the ready, or experiment with multi-color techniques that would be cumbersome with a standard single-bobbin shuttle. The closed bottom design protects your weft and keeps yarn delivery smooth and consistent, throw after throw.

Frequently Asked Questions — Closed Bottom Double Bobbin Boat Shuttle

A boat shuttle carries your weft yarn across the loom during weaving. It slides through the shed — the opening between warp threads — depositing yarn with each pass. A well-balanced shuttle makes weaving faster, smoother, and more consistent.

A closed bottom double bobbin shuttle has a solid floor beneath the bobbin cavity and holds two bobbins in a single shuttle body. The closed bottom adds stability and a slightly heavier feel, while the double bobbin capacity lets you carry two weft yarns simultaneously.

This shuttle takes two 3.5 inch cardboard quills — the same quills used with my 8 inch open and closed bottom boat shuttles.

Double bobbin shuttles are especially useful for clasped weft, two-color weft blending, shadow weave, and any pattern where two yarns need to travel together across the warp. They eliminate the need to throw two separate shuttles for certain techniques.

Each shuttle is handcrafted in Spokane, WA from premium hardwoods, shaped and finished for smooth, snag-free passage through the shed. The wood is selected for its weight, balance, and durability.
