Mini Shaft

Precision-turned replacement shaft for mini Turkish drop spindles. Hand-crafted from premium hardwood with tapered design for secure whorl fit and balanced spinning. Compatible with Riley Wood mini Turkish spindle whorls—ideal for replacing damaged shafts or building custom spindle combinations.

Key Features:

  • ✓ Hand-turned from premium hardwood (Walnut, Maple, Cherry, Hickory, White Oak, Apple, Jobillo, Purple Heart, Cocobolo, or Curly Maple)
  • ✓ Tapered design (.300"-.170") ensures secure whorl fit and prevents twisting
  • ✓ Notched tip for centered single release
  • ✓ Precision-turned for true straightness and balance
  • ✓ Compatible with Riley Wood mini Turkish spindle whorls
  • ✓ Lightweight construction (~1.5 grams)
  • ✓ Custom shaft options available upon request
  • ✓ Made in USA

Dimensions:

Length: 3.5" (9cm)
Taper: .300" (top) to .170" (bottom)
Shaft protrusion below whorl: ~1 3/16" (3cm)

Why This Design Works:

The hand-turned taper ensures the whorl arms lock together securely, preventing twisting and maintaining balance from the start of your spinning project. The notched tip allows your single to release from (as close to center) as possible of the shaft for even yarn formation. Each shaft is turned to stay truly straight and concentric throughout its length.

Note: Some shafts may develop a slight egg shape over time due to the wood being still alive and what happens during the turning process. This is nothing to be wary of and may actually help some spinners get a good flick on their spindle.

Wood Species Notes:

Whorl placement on the shaft may vary slightly depending on wood species and density. Lighter woods may sit slightly higher, while denser woods may sit lower—this is intentional and ensures optimal spinning performance for each wood type.

Compatibility:

Designed specifically for Riley Wood mini Turkish spindle whorls. May fit other makers' spindles, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Contact me with exact whorl hole dimensions if you need a custom shaft for non-Riley Wood whorls.

Frequently Asked Questions — Replacement Turkish Drop Spindle Shaft

What sizes are the replacement shafts available in?

The replacement shafts are available in three sizes to match my handmade Turkish drop spindles: mini, medium, and mega. Each shaft is sized specifically to fit its corresponding spindle, so be sure to select the size that matches the spindle you already own.

How do I know which replacement shaft size I need?

The easiest way is to check the size of your existing Turkish drop spindle. If you purchased a mini, medium, or mega spindle, you'll need the matching shaft size. If you're unsure, feel free to reach out before ordering — I want to make sure you get the right fit.

Will the replacement shaft fit my existing spindle arms?

Yes — each replacement shaft is made to the same specifications as the original shaft that came with your spindle. As long as you select the correct size, it will fit your existing arms perfectly and spin just as smoothly as the original.

What should I do if my shaft arrives damaged or doesn't fit correctly?

Please reach out as soon as possible with a photo and your order details. I stand behind every piece I make and will work with you to make it right — whether that's a replacement or another solution that works for you.

• Protrusion below whorl: approximately 1 3/16"
• Notched tip

Depending on the individual shaft, the wood may be softwood or hardwood.

This shaft is intended for the corresponding Riley Wood and Fiber Art Mini Turkish Drop Spindle whorl and is not intended as a universal replacement shaft for unrelated spindle designs.

COMPATIBILITY

Use the shaft only with the corresponding Riley Wood and Fiber Art Mini Turkish Drop Spindle whorl.

Before installation, confirm that:

• The shaft is the correct Mini size

• The shaft fits the whorl normally

• The shaft seats securely

• The shaft is straight and undamaged

• The notched tip is intact

Do not force an incompatible shaft into a whorl.

CAUTION — POINTED / TAPERED SPINDLE COMPONENT

The shaft is a narrow tapered wooden component used in a rotating handspinning tool.

• Handle carefully to avoid accidental poking or impact

• Keep the shaft away from the face and eyes

• Keep fingers, loose clothing, hair, jewelry, and other objects clear while the assembled spindle is rotating

• Keep away from children and pets

• This is a handspinning tool component, not a toy

BEFORE EACH USE

Inspect the shaft before assembly and spinning.

Do not use the shaft if:

• The wood is cracked, split, severely bent, or damaged

• The shaft has developed hazardous splinters

• The notched tip is broken or damaged

• The shaft does not seat securely in the intended whorl

• The shaft is loose enough to move unexpectedly during use

• Any damage could interfere with safe or normal spinning

INSTALLATION

Insert the shaft into the corresponding Riley Wood and Fiber Art Mini Turkish Drop Spindle whorl using normal hand pressure.

Confirm that:

• The shaft is fully seated

• The shaft is aligned correctly

• The whorl remains securely positioned

• No cracking or splitting occurs during assembly

Do not hammer, clamp, pry, or force the shaft into position.

Do not sand, drill, carve, or otherwise modify the shaft in an attempt to make it fit an incompatible whorl.

SAFE USE

Once assembled, use the spindle with adequate clearance around and below it.

Before spinning:

• Confirm the shaft and whorl are securely assembled

• Make sure people, pets, furniture, flooring, and other objects are clear of the spindle path

• Begin spinning at a controlled speed

• Stop the spindle before adjusting or disassembling components

Avoid allowing the assembled spindle to strike hard surfaces.

Repeated drops or impacts may crack, bend, split, or otherwise damage the shaft.

NOTCHED TIP

The notched tip is part of the spindle's yarn-management system.

Before use, confirm that:

• The notch is intact

• The notch does not contain a hazardous splinter

• Yarn can be positioned normally

Do not continue using the shaft if the tip or notch becomes structurally damaged.

NATURAL WOOD

The shaft may be made from softwood or hardwood depending on the individual product.

Natural variations may include:

• Wood species

• Grain

• Color

• Figure

• Texture

• Surface appearance

These variations are expected.

Wood may respond to changes in temperature and humidity.

Discontinue use if structural cracking, splitting, severe warping, or hazardous splintering develops.

CARE

• Keep the shaft clean and dry

• Remove loose fiber and yarn after use

• Do not soak or submerge the shaft in water

• Do not use harsh cleaners, solvents, or chemicals

• Wipe with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth if necessary

• Allow the shaft to dry completely before storage if it becomes damp

• Avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat or moisture

STORAGE

Store the shaft:

• In a clean, dry location

• Where it cannot be bent or crushed

• Away from heavy objects

• Where the tapered and notched ends are protected from impact

• Away from excessive heat and moisture

• Away from children and pets

DISCONTINUE USE

Stop using the shaft if:

• It cracks or splits

• It becomes severely bent

• The notch or tip breaks

• It develops hazardous splinters

• It no longer seats securely in the intended Mini whorl

• Any damage develops that could interfere with safe spinning
