GENERAL PRODUCT SAFETY REGULATION (GPSR) INFORMATION

Intended Use:
Handcrafted top whorl drop spindle designed for handspinning fiber into yarn.

Product Details:
• Approximately 2" whorl diameter
• Approximately 9.25" shaft length
• Semi-malleable glued-in hook
• Permanently glued shaft-to-whorl joint
• Natural wood construction
• Hand-rubbed Danish oil or Maloof blend finish, depending on the individual spindle

Wood combinations and finished spindle weight may vary.

Depending on the individual spindle, the shaft and/or whorl may be made from softwood or hardwood.

Because these are handcrafted from natural wood, variations in species, grain, color, figure, texture, weight, and appearance are expected.


CAUTION — ROTATING HANDSPINNING TOOL

The spindle rotates during normal use.

• Keep fingers, hands, face, hair, loose clothing, jewelry, and other objects clear of the rotating spindle

• Maintain control of the spindle while spinning

• Do not intentionally swing or throw the spindle toward another person

• Allow adequate clearance below and around the spindle before releasing it to spin

• Stop the spindle before adjusting fiber, yarn, the hook, or any component

• Keep away from children and pets

• This is a fiber-spinning tool, not a toy


BEFORE EACH USE

Inspect the Top Whorl Drop Spindle before spinning.

Do not use the spindle if:

• The shaft is cracked, split, severely bent, or damaged

• The whorl is cracked, split, loose, or structurally damaged

• The shaft-to-whorl joint has become loose or separated

• The hook is loose, broken, severely bent, or damaged

• The wood has developed hazardous splinters or sharp damaged edges

• The spindle rotates with severe wobble caused by damage

• Any other condition could interfere with safe or normal use


HOOK SAFETY

The spindle includes a semi-malleable hook used to guide and secure the yarn during spinning.

Before use, confirm that:

• The hook is securely attached

• The hook is not cracked or broken

• The hook does not have a sharp damaged edge

• The hook remains positioned appropriately for normal spinning

Because the hook is semi-malleable, minor careful repositioning may be possible when needed.

Do not repeatedly bend, sharply kink, twist, or force the hook.

Repeated or excessive bending may weaken or break the hook.

If the hook becomes loose or damaged, discontinue use until repaired or replaced.


SHAFT & WHORL JOINT

The shaft is permanently glued into the whorl.

Before each use, check that:

• The shaft remains firmly attached to the whorl

• There is no visible separation at the joint

• The shaft does not move independently of the whorl

• No cracking has developed around the joint

Do not attempt to pull, twist, or remove the shaft from the whorl.

Discontinue use if the glued joint becomes loose.


SAFE SPINNING

Use the spindle in an area with adequate clearance.

Before releasing the spindle:

• Confirm that people, pets, furniture, flooring, and other objects are clear of the spinning path

• Make sure the yarn is properly secured

• Maintain control of the fiber supply

• Begin at a comfortable, controlled speed

Avoid allowing the spindle to strike hard surfaces.

Repeated drops or impacts may damage the shaft, whorl, hook, or glued joint.


WINDING YARN

Wind spun yarn onto the shaft in a controlled manner.

Distribute yarn so the cop remains reasonably balanced.

Excessively uneven winding may:

• Increase spindle wobble

• Make the spindle harder to control

• Reduce spinning efficiency

Do not wind so much yarn onto the spindle that it interferes with the whorl, hook, or normal handling.


NATURAL WOOD

Depending on the individual spindle, the shaft and/or whorl may be made from softwood or hardwood.

Wood is a natural material and may respond to changes in temperature and humidity.

Natural variations may include:

• Wood species

• Grain

• Color

• Figure

• Texture

• Weight

• Surface appearance

These variations are expected.

Discontinue use if structural cracking, splitting, severe warping, or hazardous splintering develops.


CARE

• Remove loose fiber and yarn after use

• Keep the spindle clean and dry

• Do not soak or submerge the spindle in water

• Do not place the spindle in a dishwasher

• Do not use harsh cleaners, solvents, or chemicals on the wood or finish

• Wipe with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth when necessary

• Allow the spindle to dry completely before storage if it becomes damp

• Avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat or moisture

• Periodically inspect the shaft, whorl, glued joint, and hook for wear or damage


STORAGE

Store the spindle:

• In a clean, dry location

• Where the shaft cannot be bent or crushed

• Where the hook cannot be caught, bent, or damaged

• Away from excessive heat and moisture

• Protected from heavy objects and impacts

• Away from children and pets

Do not store the spindle under tension or with objects pressing against the shaft or hook.


DISCONTINUE USE

Stop using the spindle if:

• The shaft cracks or splits

• The whorl becomes loose or structurally damaged

• The glued shaft-to-whorl joint begins to separate

• The hook becomes loose, broken, or dangerously damaged

• Severe wobble develops because of damage

• Hazardous splinters develop

• Any condition develops that could interfere with safe handling or normal spinning
