Frequently Asked Questions — Standard Tooth Wool Combs
What fibers work best with standard tooth wool combs?
Standard tooth wool combs are ideal for longwool and medium-grade fibers like Romney, Corriedale, BFL, and raw fleece with a staple length of 3 inches or more. They excel at opening, aligning, and preparing coarser fibers for worsted-style spinning.
How do wool combs differ from a hackle?
Wool combs are hand-held and worked in pairs — fiber is loaded onto one comb and transferred to the other to align and remove short fibers. Hackles are stationary tools better suited for drawing a continuous top from larger quantities of fiber.
Can I use wool combs to blend fibers?
Yes — load multiple fiber types onto the comb together and work them through to create a blended preparation. Standard tooth combs handle bulkier blends and natural fibers like wool, mohair, and alpaca well.
What makes Riley Wood and Fiber Art wool combs different?
Each comb is handcrafted in Spokane, WA from premium hardwoods with tines set by hand for consistent spacing. Built for serious fiber prep, they are designed to last a lifetime of heavy use.
