DIY Fusing Instructions:

Cut the drive band material to your exact required length. To join the ends, light a candle and hold each end approximately 1/2"–3/4" from the flame (not touching). When the material begins to shine and soften, quickly but gently press the ends together firmly and hold for 30–60 seconds until cooled. Use flush cutters to trim any excess squeeze-out for a smooth seam. The material heats quickly, so work carefully to avoid melting.

How to Measure Your Drive Band:

Remove your old drive band and measure its total length when laid flat. Alternatively, wrap a string around your drive wheel and flyer in the same path as the drive band, mark where it meets, and measure the string. Most single-drive spinning wheels require 6–8 feet of material.

Care & Maintenance

Store unused material in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation. Inspect your drive band regularly for signs of wear, stretching, or damage. Replace promptly if you notice excessive wear, cracking, or loss of tension. Clean your drive wheel and flyer before installing a new drive band to ensure optimal grip and performance.

GENERAL PRODUCT SAFETY REGULATION (GPSR) INFORMATION

Intended Use:
Replacement drive band material sold by length for spinning wheels and related compatible drive systems.

Available material type, diameter, and ordered length may vary by selected product option.

This listing may include either:

• Unjoined drive band material sold by the foot for the customer to cut, size, and join

OR

• Drive band material cut and fused by Riley Wood and Fiber Art to the finished length specified by the customer

The customer is responsible for selecting the correct drive band material, diameter, and finished length for the intended spinning wheel or equipment.


COMPATIBILITY

Before ordering, confirm:

• The required drive band material

• The required diameter

• The required finished length

• The correct routing method for the spinning wheel

• Whether the wheel requires an open length, continuous loop, crossed band, or other configuration

• That the selected material is appropriate for the intended wheel

Do not assume that one drive band material, diameter, or length will fit all spinning wheels.

If the wheel manufacturer specifies a particular drive band material, diameter, length, routing, or installation procedure, follow those instructions.


CUSTOM FUSED-LENGTH OPTION

If you select the fused-length option, Riley Wood and Fiber Art will cut and fuse the drive band material to the finished length provided by the customer.

The customer is responsible for supplying the correct finished length.

Before submitting a custom length:

• Verify the measurement for the specific spinning wheel

• Confirm whether the measurement represents the finished continuous-loop length required

• Confirm the selected material and diameter are compatible with the wheel

• Consider any wheel-specific tensioning or adjustment requirements

Riley Wood and Fiber Art cannot determine the correct finished length from the wheel brand or model unless that specific configuration is otherwise identified in the product listing.

A customer-specified fused drive band should be inspected and test-fitted before normal operation.


UNJOINED MATERIAL

If purchasing unjoined drive band material:

The customer is responsible for:

• Determining the correct finished length

• Cutting the material safely

• Joining the material using a method appropriate for the specific drive band material

• Inspecting the completed joint before use

• Confirming the finished band operates correctly on the intended spinning wheel

Use appropriate tools and follow the joining method recommended for the selected material.

Use caution around hot tools, blades, or other equipment used during cutting or joining.

Do not use a poorly formed, weak, partially joined, or damaged drive band.


CAUTION — MOVING SPINNING WHEEL COMPONENT

Once installed, the drive band moves continuously around the wheel and pulley system during normal operation.

• Keep fingers and hands away from the drive band while the wheel is moving

• Keep hair, loose clothing, jewelry, yarn, fiber, and other objects clear of the moving drive band and pulleys

• Stop the spinning wheel completely before installing, removing, repositioning, or inspecting the drive band

• Do not attempt to adjust the drive band while the wheel is rotating

• Keep children and pets away from the moving drive system

• This is a spinning wheel component, not a toy


BEFORE INSTALLATION

Inspect the drive band material before installation.

Do not install or use it if:

• The material is cut, torn, cracked, badly abraded, or otherwise damaged

• A fused or customer-made joint is separating

• The joint has a significant defect that could interfere with pulley travel

• The band is excessively stretched or permanently deformed

• The material has been damaged during cutting or joining

• Any condition could cause the band to fail unexpectedly


INSTALLATION

Stop the spinning wheel completely before installing the drive band.

Install the completed drive band according to the normal routing for the specific spinning wheel.

During installation:

• Confirm the band follows the correct pulley path

• Make sure the drive band is not twisted unless the wheel design specifically requires a crossed band

• Keep the band away from sharp edges or damaged pulley surfaces

• Do not stretch the band excessively to force it into position

• Do not use sharp tools in a way that could cut or nick the installed band

After installation, rotate the wheel slowly by hand and confirm that the band travels normally around the intended pulley surfaces.


DRIVE BAND TENSION

Use only enough tension for normal spinning wheel operation.

Excessive tension may:

• Increase wear on the drive band

• Place unnecessary load on spinning wheel components

• Cause premature stretching or failure

• Affect normal operation

If the wheel includes an adjustable tension system, follow the wheel manufacturer's instructions.


FUSED OR JOINED AREA

If the band has been fused or otherwise joined into a continuous loop, inspect the joint before each use.

Check for:

• Separation

• Cracking

• Excessive thinning

• Bulging

• Deformation

• Abrasion

• Damage from repeated pulley contact

A visible joint may be a normal result of the joining process.

The joint should remain structurally secure and should travel through the drive system without catching or interfering with normal operation.

Discontinue use if the joint begins to separate or deteriorate.


BEFORE EACH USE

Before operating the spinning wheel:

• Inspect the entire drive band for wear or damage

• Confirm the band is correctly routed

• Confirm the band remains properly seated on the wheel and pulley system

• Inspect any fused or customer-made joint

• Confirm appropriate tension

• Rotate the wheel slowly by hand if necessary to verify normal tracking

Do not operate the wheel if the drive band repeatedly leaves the intended pulley path or behaves abnormally.


SAFE USE

During spinning:

• Keep hands away from the moving drive band and pulleys

• Keep loose fiber and yarn from wrapping around the drive band

• Stop the wheel before clearing tangled fiber or yarn

• Stop the wheel before changing drive band routing or tension

• Do not intentionally touch or slow the moving band by hand

If the drive band comes off during operation, allow the wheel to stop completely before reinstalling it.


NORMAL WEAR

Drive bands are wear components and may gradually change with use.

Depending on material and spinning conditions, normal wear may include:

• Surface polishing

• Minor abrasion

• Gradual stretching

• Changes in flexibility

• Wear at the joined area

Regular inspection is recommended.

Replace the drive band before wear progresses to the point where failure could occur during operation.


CARE

• Keep drive band material clean and dry

• Remove loose fiber, yarn, and debris as needed

• Avoid contact with sharp objects

• Avoid unnecessary exposure to oils, solvents, harsh cleaners, or chemicals unless appropriate for the selected material

• Do not intentionally grind or abrade the drive band

• Inspect fused or customer-made joints periodically


STORAGE

Uninstalled drive band material should be stored:

• In a clean, dry location

• Away from sharp objects

• Away from excessive heat

• Away from prolonged direct sunlight where practical

• Without unnecessary stretching or tension

• Without heavy objects placed on top of it

• Away from children and pets


DISCONTINUE USE

Stop using the drive band if:

• A fused or customer-made joint begins to separate

• The material becomes cracked, cut, torn, or severely abraded

• The band develops significant permanent deformation

• The band can no longer maintain normal tension

• The band repeatedly leaves the intended pulley path despite correct installation and wheel adjustment

• Any damage develops that could cause unexpected drive band failure

Replace worn or damaged drive band material before continuing to operate the spinning wheel.
