Riley Wood And Fiber Art top whorl drop spindle
Each one of these Drop Spindles was a lot of fun to make. And in that spirit, 👻 I just took away whatever material didn’t seem to fit. With a lot of care of course, and eye-catching features, not found on other spindles. They’re sure to get your friends talking 🤷.
It weighs approximately 22.08 grams is 8" long and roughly 1.5" overall diameter.
First, I laminated the various exotic or tropical hardwoods or domestically grown soft or hardwoods. I drill a precision hole for the exact diameter of the shaft that’s to about .005” tolerance. I achieved that by meticulously sanding after getting to a certain turned diameter. I then glue in that precision shaft into the hole to make it one permanently.
They are Turned completely on center, they need to be re-chucked a couple times, so the whole entire spindle is then re-turned to ensure it’s still on center. This process typically happens at least twice.
Honestly, the pictures hardly do these spindles justice. Each has unique aesthetic features rarely found on other spindles. Most are very lightweight making them ideal for shorter or more difficult fiber.
The hook is glued in, but also semi malleable (bendable), not easily but it is. So, If you’re not happy with their placement, they can be adjusted. although I have put a lot of thought into these, and I know how important balance is. I believe I have them set up as close to perfect as one could be.
Finished with an eco-friendly Danish oil and or a 1/3ea mineral spirits, boiled, linseed, oil, and tongue oil, also known as a Maloof blend. hand rubbed to a fairly shiny look.
These spindle whorl shapes remind me of many things from 🔔 to 👑 to 🛸 to 🌷 tulips to be exact 🤭.
