Even well-made spindles can feel frustrating when something goes wrong. Most problems beginners encounter have straightforward causes and simple fixes. This guide covers the most common Turkish drop spindle problems and how to solve them.
The Yarn Keeps Breaking
Yarn breaks most often when it's drafted too thinly, when there isn't enough twist holding the fibers together, or when the spindle's weight is pulling on a weak section. Allow more twist to build before drafting further, and try drafting slightly thicker fiber until your technique becomes more consistent.
The Spindle Wobbles
Wobbling usually means the yarn is wound unevenly on the arms, or the spindle was spun with a sharp flick rather than a smooth spin. Wind yarn as evenly as possible and use a controlled spin. A small amount of yarn on the spindle also contributes to wobble — it often stabilizes as the cop builds. Learn more about how spindle momentum works.
The Yarn Is Over-Twisted
Over-twisting happens when the spindle spins too long before you draft. Allow more fiber into the drafting zone or spin for less time before drafting. Learn how to wind yarn on a Turkish drop spindle evenly to help manage twist buildup.
The Yarn Is Thick and Uneven
Uneven yarn usually means too much fiber is entering the drafting zone at once. Draft smaller amounts of fiber and move your drafting hand further from the fiber supply. See my guide on spinning thick vs thin yarn on a Turkish drop spindle for more control techniques.
The Fiber Won't Draft Smoothly
Sticky or clumpy fiber is almost always a preparation problem. Open the fiber gently with your hands before spinning. My handmade wool combs and wool hackles produce smooth, aligned fiber that drafts far more easily. See my guide on best fibers for Turkish drop spindle spinning for fiber selection advice.
The Spindle Feels Wrong for the Yarn
If the spindle loses momentum too quickly or feels too heavy for the fiber, the size may not match the yarn weight. See my guide on Turkish drop spindle sizes explained and my guide to choosing the right Turkish drop spindle to find a better match.
Drafting Feels Uncontrolled
Drafting control develops with practice. See my guide on how to draft fiber for Turkish drop spindle spinning for technique guidance.
